Does what it says on the tin; helps delegates to develop exciting writing for visitors. Words matter. Compelling copy can turn a visitor experience from hum drum into something memorable, engaging and most of all magical.

The day will include:

  • the steps to exciting writing
  • real examples of good and bad interpretative text (with a stash of examples to take away with you)
  • different writing styles and formats to try
  • making sure your copy is accessible and how to employ Plain English when you need it
  • how to manage the editorial process and avoid nightmares including the dreaded ‘writing by committee’ (ahhhh, all run for the hills)
  • hints and tips to polish your copy
  • and a few secret weapons that we keep in our own personal stash of writing tools.

We’ll look at different styles and examples to get your creative juices flowing and then work through enjoyable and effective exercises together (who says work has to feel like work?). By the end of the day you’ll go away more confident and with some great tips and new techniques to try back at your venue.

As with all of our workshops, there will be plenty of opportunity for discussion and individual questions. We don’t palm you off to external trainers; our team will personally look after you. This way we ensure the quality of our workshops is always tip top.

Who is it for?

This workshop is perfect for those staff and volunteers who need to write interpretation as part of their role. This includes anything from panels and object labels to trails and blogs. It’s also a useful day for anyone who has to edit, contribute to or commission writing for interpretation.

Don’t worry if you’ve never written anything before, if you’re just starting out or think what you’ve written is rubbish (it really probably isn’t anyway!) – this workshop will be a non-threatening environment in which to build your skills. This day will leave you buzzing and ready to leap into action.

What do we say to all of our clients? If there’s one string to add to your bow, it’s got to be inspiring interpretative writing. Let us help your interpretation stand out from the crowd.

Our workshops are for up to 15 delegates – that’s less than £27.00 per person!

All our fun and inspiring workshops include:

  • Follow-up email to all delegates and free support tools such as our Flickr galleries of best practice and INSPIRE email network
  • Summary of evaluation data from the workshop – emailed to you within two weeks of the workshop
  • Goody bags for all workshop delegates and additional resources available from £2.50 per person
  • Travel and subsistence charged at actual cost
  • Carbon offset of travel

Before today I was…‘Confused, where to start, what to do.’

During the session I was thinking…‘I want to start now, I have lots of ideas, I feel inspired.’

As a result of today I will…‘Write lots about lots but think really hard about writing it carefully.’

Delegate comments, Hartlebury Castle

n

Before today I was…‘Used to writing reports, articles etc. Using lots of long sentences and probably going into too much detail.’

During the session I was thinking…‘That ideas were useful and thought provoking.’

As a result of today I will…‘Cut out the waffle! And think from someone else’s perspective and think of looking at writing in more of a human slant!’

Delegate comments, Wildlife Trust Countryside

Before today I was…‘Nervous about writing exciting text, daunted about collating information in a concise and coherent way.’

During the session I was thinking…‘I had lots of ideas for our exhibition and wanted to get started.’

As a result of today I will…‘Be able to formulate a plan for writing content for the exhibition, be able to edit text and ensure it is accessible as well as making it exciting!’

Delegate comments, Bentley Priory Museum, May 2017

Before today I was…‘Semi-confident but out of practice.’

During the session I was thinking…‘It refreshed quite a lot of what I learned about museum interpretive text from my museums studies course. I enjoyed the session a lot and just wish I had more opportunity to do interpretive writing!’

As a result of today I will…‘Put into practice / bear in mind the ideas discussed today when proof reading content produces by my colleagues.’
